The fabulous Gateway of India in Mumbai

The monument marks the area as a principle point where many visitors originally arrived in India. Today it is a popular tourist attraction and meeting point.

The Gateway is a huge stone Arch of Triumph originally constructed to show the first-ever visit of a British Monarch to India. King George V and Queen Mary came ashore near here in December 1911. The Construction of the monument began in May 1920 and opened in December 1924. The last British troops formally to leave India passed through the gateway in February 1948.

The Gateway became the most appreciated symbol of Mumbai, the financial capital of India. The Taj Mahal Hotel and the statue of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaja stands opposite to the monument. The Gateway looks gorgeous at night when it is illuminated. The monument is a major tourist attraction and attracts huge crowds during late evening.

The tourist should avoid purchasing item from here as they may charge more than the actual price. Consider visiting this place when you are in India.
